Presenting Entrepreneurship on a Resume

Q: I have been living and working outside of the United States for almost three years. I have a small spa in the Caribbean and due to the slowing economy, have decided to return to the States to utilize my bachelor's degree in communications. Could you give me a bit of advice on how to present my entrepreneurial past to prospective employers as I return to the corporate work force?

If you're looking for a job in communications, the first thing you'll want to do is go online and examine sample resumes in the niche you're most interested in (for example, public relations or advertising). Make a note of the skills and results expected of these professionals, and craft a resume so that your entrepreneurial experience is palatable to hiring managers. For instance, you might create a functional resume that lists your experience in relevant skill areas such as customer relations, public speaking, marketing and business writing. If you are applying to a firm that services clients, your entrepreneurial expertise in sales and financial management should also translate well. Don't forget to showcase hard-core results as opposed to responsibilities.
